Spartanburg County Council to discuss handing jail over to sheriffBy Stephen Largenstephen.largen@shj.com Spartanburg County Council will meet in special session this afternoon to begin the process of formally handing over control of the county jail to Sheriff Chuck Wright. Council voted Monday to approve a budget for the new fiscal year that eliminated $2.6 million in slated jail employee overtime costs by shifting control of the jail to Wright. At Thursday's meeting, council will vote on whether to give the first of three necessary approvals to an ordinance that would amend the county code to transfer all powers and duties related to the jail from the county to the sheriff. The meeting starts at 3:15 p.m. and will be held in conference room two in the County Administration Building at 366 N. Church St.
