The County Jail is a Model One

Mr. A.Z. Hazard, a representative of the Pauly (O.) Jail company, which firm designed and erected the Spartanburg county jail, has been on a visit here, inspecting the fortress for the law breakers here in the west section of the city, in rear of the courthouse. He was well pleased with the condition of affairs, the works and appointments of the building, and the manner in which the inmates are cared for, as well. He secured a local photographer to take a picture of the jail and grounds, which he is anxious to exhibit and use in the advertisements of the company. He unhesitatingly pronounced the Spartanburg jail to be one of the best ever turned out by the Pauly company.

The county jail was built ten years ago, at a cost of $40,000. It is a model building of the kind. In addition to its numerous cells, corridors and hallways, all of which are admirably adapted as to location, there is a large hospital room, and the scaffold for the execution of prisoners is located on the third floor of the building.

Everything works like a clock throughout the entire building, in the automatic system. The electric lights are turned on and off by pressing the buttons, there is an adequate steam heating plant, and the building is thoroughly ventilated.

The front portion of the building which faces Wofford Street, is apart exclusively for a residence portion, and it consists of a nice attractive home.

The jail building and premises are surrounded by a heavy, compact wall, and the iron gates are in evidence at every side of the building.
